Project #4 Throwing Shade

I was successful in “Throwing Shade” in my project by using spotlights on my Bas-relief sculpture and then emulateing the shadows that the lights cast with black acrylic paint.

What I feel I was most successful with this project were the actual construction of the sculpture and the size. I learned so much about working with the wood and the actual construction. I feel like my piece is interesting without being too large or too small. My biggest struggle with this project was working with the band saw. I was too timid and scared with my cuts at first. I feel like my shapes may be repetitive without the ability to make curved cuts. I would like feedback on if my homemade stain and shadows work together.

Project# 3 – Nine Cubes

What I feel I was most successful with this project was the actual construction of the net. I really had to fine tune my net a few times before I got a sturdy box. All my subsequent boxes were fairly sturdy. My biggest struggle with this project was working with the bristol paper in general. I have not developed a good cutting technique or planning process yet. The finality of cutting the bristol paper gives me a little anxiety. I would like feedback on if there is a good way for me to get started with the paper cutting/planning easily.

Process:

Secret 1: Clinical. This box represents the spiraling out of control associated with mental health and the judgement one may receive.

Secret 2: Pressure. This is the type of secret associated with the shame of abuse that is kept tightly and neatly locked away.

Secret 3: Art School. This box represents procrastination and the stress of attending Art school.

Project #2 Contours and Lines: Critique Statement

Project #2 Contours and Lines Critique Statement
What I feel I was most successful with during my project was my overall articulation of the object. I feel like I was able to make my object easily identifiable while also leaving a lot of open space for the eye to travel through. I really liked being able to represent the parts of the blow dryer that I thought were most interesting and omitting non interesting features. The ordinary blow dryer becomes almost an animated version of itself with the wire. My biggest struggle was getting the cord to be a structurally sound base. After much struggle I borrowed a heavier weight wire from a classmate. Once I added the heavier wire to the cord I was able to get a sturdy base. I would like feedback on if the object has enough detail or if there is anything I should add? Is the base aesthetically pleasing or is it too messy?

Place.

While walking in the Wissahickon Valley Park to collect my project materials, I had plenty of time to contemplate place. Trying to comprehend how so much expansive green lush forest can exist in the very busy urban landscape. What kind of people planned this park? The area seems so protected and vulnerable at the same time.

The forest was also much more vibrant than normal as I collected my material in the rainstorm.

What I feel I was most successful with during my project was conveying the overall theme of my project. I want to convey the passage of time and movement. Both of these themes relate to our changing urban landscape. My original goal was to make an hourglass type structure although my finished piece came out as a more abstract version. My biggest struggle was getting started. I have a tendency to self-doubt and over thinking the planning process. I also struggled a little with my material being wet as it was raining when I collected my twigs. I would like feedback on my overall construction and if it seems to have a point to all the chaos. Is anything too distracting? Is it too abstract?
